Dekadente Poolparty und chronische Unterernährung

English translation in the bottom half of this article.

A decadent Pool Party and Chronic Undernourishment
More than 700 poster abstracts are confusing. Especially when, although they are nicely bound together, there is no easy way to actually find the ones of interest to oneself among them. While they were rather stingy with the daily packed lunch at the EMBO conference, the organisers forked out money for the conference party at a luxury hotel. If you discount this fact, everything was great!
The EMBO conference is over and I have to catch up on some sleep. The positive impressions of the conference definitely outweigh the negative ones. The organisation was excellent, the speakers were very good and nearly everyone stuck to the given time-frame. The conference party took place by a pool in the garden of a luxury hotel directly next to the venue. The ambiance of the place was perceived as nearly decadent by some of the guests.
However, flattery is not my specialty and I do much better when blogging about negative things. Namely: The EMBO Meeting fabric bags which seem to weigh four kilos. The programme, the book with the abstracts in it, the booklet containing the delayed abstracts, the writing pad of the advertising partner, the advertisements for journals, microscopes and other goodies for molecular biologists I cannot even remember anymore, because I have disposed of them as soon as I had received them. The bag filled with 17 (arduously counted in compulsory labour by the hands of a Ph. D student) different articles is expendable.
A well-arranged programme to put in one’s pocket and a USB-stick containing digital versions of the information materials would suffice. In this way, the so-inclined attendant of the conference could actually benefit from the poster sessions. Abstracts you can browse on a laptop or abstracts sorted according to keywords tremendously facilitate finding among the more than 700 posters those concerning one’s own areas of interest.
As tasty as the caprese composition of peeled cherry tomato and baby-mozzarella arranged next to basil pesto in a glass that was served at the conference party has been (see photo above) – the food rations handed out for lunch at the conference consisted of a meagre bread roll, a piece of fruit, 330 ml of water and a chocolate bar on every single day. The most variation could be found in the choice of the chocolate bars. Mars on sunday, Toblerone on monday, KitKat on tuesday. It’s not easy, enduring long days at a conference without becoming aggressive or suffering dizzy spells when undernourished like that. To clarify the food predicament, I have embedded a screenshot from my facebook timeline: meeting participants discussing the lunch packages.
This is it. I am done with my report on the EMBO Meeting in Barcelona. Thanks go to Henja Wehmann who translated the blog posts into English. Below, you will find a list of all the articles regarding the EMBO Meeting by both my two guest bloggers and myself:
